# AI Meets the Consumer Decision Journey

AI rapidly entered our everyday lives when people started using it for various professional and personal tasks. Most used it to avoid dealing with “boring tasks” themselves, while others also used it to get personalized advice. Now, in the new age of agentic commerce, consumers are being influenced by AI when navigating their purchase decisions.

We can describe the evolution of agentic commerce in four stages: Assist, Advise, Delegate and Autonomous. The use of AI gradually expands in our everyday lives as we give it more responsibilities, moving us into the Advise stage. In this stage, an AI agent searches, compares and evaluates product options during a consumer’s decision journey.

Agentic commerce is expected to advance to the point that, not long from now, AI agents will be making purchase decisions for humans. For now, the influence is much more subtle, with only 17% of shoppers comfortable enough to make their purchases entirely through AI. However, a much larger percentage of shoppers, specifically 58%, have already used AI to research products. At this stage, it seems that AI is less about making the final choice and more about influencing which products consumers discover, compare, and consider.

As this becomes part of the new commercial landscape, brands need to keep their strategies for staying visible up to date. When AI is part of the consumer decision journey, some of the strategies brands currently use for visibility and consideration could mean little to a bot, as it cannot recognize emotional qualities in the same way a human can. That does not mean branding is dead. Far from it. But brands will need to adapt how their value is communicated so that they remain visible to both humans and AI.

In the age of agentic commerce, the features of a product drive product discovery. Consequently, clear product attributes, structured information, and AI-readable content become increasingly important. Notably, within this new channel, emotional cues take a secondary role as product discovery follows a more rational logic. This does not make emotionally resonant branding less important, but it does mean that brand strategies will need to gradually adapt to remain visible in an increasingly AI-driven decision journey.

In practice, brands need to focus on making product features—especially the ones that consumers use in prompts—AI readable. Product information needs to be clear and structured so AI can easily retrieve, interpret and compare the features of products. Traditionally, brands competed for visibility on shelves and search results. However, in this emerging age, brands now need to consider their visibility to AI as well.

So, in this era, conveying the value of a product also means making sure that value can be recognized by the AI agent. The challenge, then, is not to choose between optimizing for humans or AI. It is to make sure that what makes your product valuable to people does not get lost in translation when an AI agent enters the decision journey. The best way to do this is to accurately measure how much consumers value your product attributes and feed this into both your innovation and your messaging.
